Buyer jobs are found throughout the UK. Retail buyers are responsible for selecting a range of new products to sell in retail shops and outlets. Experience is obviously a big asset, as any buyer needs to have a deep understanding of customer demands and market trends. One eye needs to be kept on the economy and the other on new trends and fashions. Buyers need to also consider ethical values held by the clients and store, as well as the store policy. The entry level has to be as a buyers assistant, as the only real training is achieved on the job and over time.

An ability to work within financial budgets is a key part of the role. Buyers are expected to source new merchandise or products as well as constantly reviewing existing ones.

Some of the major responsibilities of the job is analysing consumer buying habits and any patterns and predicting the future trends. Another aspect is managing levels of stock and reacting to demand. Communication skills are constantly required for meeting suppliers and negotiating terms. An important part of the career is maintaining relationships with existing suppliers and attending trade fairs both in the UK and overseas.
