Structural engineers are the creators of buildings that don't fall over despite wind, usage or other natural forces exerted against them. Structural engineers will design most structures from resident homes to hospitals, office blocks, bridges and almost anything large and man made!.
Structural engineers choose materials to meet design specifications outlined by the architect. When construction has begun, they are involved in supervising work and helping contractors. Other jobs can be to survey buildings and other structures to test if they are sound. Structural engineers need to be able to:
- analysing configurations of the basic structural.
- calculate pressures, stresses and strains.
- Work out the strength of materials.
- liaise with other designers and architects.
- survey structures at risk of collapse.
- make drawings and computer models of structures for building contractors.
- investigating ground conditions.
- use computer aided design (CAD) technology.
