Unemployment rates among Catholics in N Ireland were higher than those among Protestants in 2002/03. The unemployment rate for Catholic men was 9 per cent compared with 5 per cent for Protestant men. The unemployment rates for woman were 6 per cent for Catholics and 3 per cent for Protestants. This differential was consistent for all age groups except one - 25, where the employment rates were around the same. More Catholics than Protestants were economically inactive being not actively seeking work. In 2002 and 2003, 24 per cent of male Catholics were economically inactive compared with 18 per cent of male Protestants. This was the same for most age groups. Inactivity rates were higher for women than for males. 42 per cent of Catholic women were inactive compared with 31 per cent of Protestant. This occurred across all age groups in Northern Ireland. A higher percentage of Catholics than Protestants were working in construction being 25 per cent as against with 15 per cent. Education achievement showed little difference between Catholics and Protestants in 2002 or 2003. Catholics aged 50+ generally had fewer qualifications. In 2002 and 2003, around 1:10 of Protestants and Catholics had a degree. One quarter had GCE 'A' levels while a quarter had no qualifications.

Unemployment in N. Ireland has decreased in recent years being 7%. In 1986 it was poor at over 17 percent. Youth unemployment and long-term unemployment have fallen over the last decade. Sadly, the inactive population of N Ireland still remain high. Another issue is that the Irish tend to work longer working hours than the rest of the UK. Northern Ireland's unemployment rate has almost doubled in recent times due to the poor economic climate. In November 2010 it was 7% whilst Britain's average was 7.7%.
