The Midlands include the counties of Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Birmingham is the largest city in the Midlands and Birmingham has the second largest urban economy in the UK. Employment today is dominated by the service sector which employed 86% of its employment in 2006. Birmingham is the largest centre for employment in public admin, education and health in the UK and is also strong in banking jobs, finance and insurance vacancies. Lloyds Bank and the Midland Bank (now HSBC Bank) originated from Birmingham. Tourism is also a big employer with the International Convention Centre and National Exhibition Centre hosting huge UK conference and exhibition trade shows. Sporting and cultural venues attract large numbers of visitors so hospitality and catering jobs are frequent and many are seasonal. There are 3 Universities, (Aston University, University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University) that employ around 15,000 staff.

Solihull offers a lot of jobs due to its shopping facilities. It has an open-air shopping centre called Mell Square and in 2002, a large new shopping centre, Touchwood, was opened by the Queen. Solihull is the home of the four-wheel-drive car manufacturer Land Rover and a range of other major companies offering substantial employment.

Chesterfield is a thriving town in the Midlands and the biggest employer is the Post Office.

Coventry has motor and cycle manufacturing employment at its heart but the motor industry has declined with only Jaguar retaining its corporate and research headquarters in the city and Peugeot still have a large parts centre in Humber Road. Black cab taxis are made in Coventry by LTI and these are now the only cars completely built in Coventry. Coventry's main employment sectors are cars, electronic equipment, machine tools, agricultural and farm machinery, man-made fibres, aerospace parts and components and telecoms systems and equipment. The city has moved away from manufacturing industries towards business services, financial services, research and development, design and development and various creative industries.

Engineering is a major employer in Leicester. Companies like Jones and Shipman who build machine tools and control systems, Richards Engineering who are a foundry equipment producer, Transmon Engineering who do materials handling equipment and Trelleborg who do rail, marine, and industrial applications. Employment is strong and also there are plenty of apprenticeship schemes. Engineering departments at Leicester University, De Montfort University, and Loughborough University stimulate the continued strength in this sector. There are 2 main shopping centres in Leicester. One is the Haymarket Centre and the other Highcross Leicester. Both have many shop jobs and have department stores including Fenwick, John Lewis and Debenhams. Leicester Market is the largest outdoor covered market place in UK and a significant employer. Financial and business service companies include Santander, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays Bank, HSBC, and KPMG. Investment trading, accountancy and financial services jobs are available and often shown on Amber Jobs.

Wolverhampton is a major employer in the Midlands area. Surrounded by Birmingham, Coventry, Lichfield, Leamington Spa, Stoke on Trent and Worcester it also has economic relationships with Bridgnorth, Cannock, Dudley, Newport, Kidderminster,Stafford,Telford and West Bromwich. Wolverhampton's economy was engineering and manufacturing but now over 70% of the workforce are involved in service industries. Public administration, education and health, hotels and restaurants and finance or IT make up a vast amount of Wolverhampton jobs. The largest employer is Wolverhampton City Council with over 12,000 staff. In Banking there is Birmingham Midshires and in Education the University of Wolverhampton and City of Wolverhampton College. Construction jobs are often provided by Tarmac, Carillion & Carvers. Brewing jobs are from Marston's, and Aerospace jobs can be found at H S Marston, MOOG and Goodrich Actuation Systems. The Retail sector is strong with employment from Beatties and with Manufacturing there is Chubb Locks.
