In the latest calendar quarter (October to December 2010) employment rates of 71.1 per cent were achieved, returning it to the highest of UK countries. In England the employment rate was 70.7 per cent for the same quarter. In Quarter 4 2009 Scotland had an employment rate of 71.5 per cent with England having 70.8 per cent which created a gap of 0.7 percent. During the year the gap shifted by 0.4 percentage points maintaining Scotland's relative position as the top performing country in the UK. Scotland's Employment Rate (16-64 age group) is the highest for the UK. Since the beginning of the 1990's Scotland's employment rate has been increasing. The peak was nearly 75 per cent during the 2nd calendar quarter of 2007. However, in the previous 3 quarters the employment rate in England was higher than Scotland.
