The South West of England covers 9,200 square miles and includes Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. There is a variety of employment for the 5 million people who live there. One area is often referred to as the West Country. The largest city is Bristol, with other major employment and recruitment centres being Plymouth, Swindon, Gloucester, Exeter and Bath, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.
Bristol, the M4 corridor and south east Dorset all benefit from good transport links to London. This has created employment within these areas. Bristol accounts for a quarter of the region's economy with the rest mostly being made up by Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. The South West of England Regional Development Agency is situated in Exeter, and the South West Strategic Leaders' Board's offices are in Taunton. Bristol's economy has its roots in the maritime trade. Since then, aeronautics have taken over as the basis of Bristol's economy. Businesses such as Airbus UK, Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems are based in Filton. Defence Equipment and Support is at MoD Abbey Wood with telecoms,information technology and electronics companies in Bristol and in Swindon.
Cornwall and Devon have their fair share of large companies. Imerys, Dairy Crest in Davidstow and Ginsters have a food production plant in Callington. The Met Office is in Exeter as is Connaught plc and Pennon Group. HMNB Devonport are in Plymouth and the Britannia Royal Naval College is at Dartmouth. All these places have jobs and employment on a regular basis throughout the year. Ambrosia employ in Lifton and WKD Original Vodka recruit in Torquay. In Plymouth Devonport Management Limited (DML) are a major employer plus the airline Flybe is based at Exeter Airport.

Gloucestershire has GCHQ in Cheltenham, Endsleigh Insurance, Kraft Foods, UCAS, Spirax-Sarco Engineering Plc, Chelsea Building Society, GE Aviation Systems UK and many smaller service industry companies. The Cheltenham & Gloucester bank is in Barnwood in north Gloucester next to Unilever. The Colt Car Company UK are in Cirencester along with The Stroud & Swindon Building Society. GSK recruit in Coleford in the Forest of Dean, Dairy Crest are at Severnside at Stonehouse and the Mabey Group have Lydney. The Fire Service College is in Moreton-in-Marsh and Symantec have offices in Gloucester.
Somerset - The Royal Marines have a base for 40 Commando near Taunton and also at Lympstone in Devon. Screwfix has its offices in Yeovil and Clarks shoes is in Street. Wessex Water, Future plc, and Rotork are all based in Bath. Westland Helicopters operate in Yeovil and Weston-super-Mare while Dairy Crest makes brandy butter in Chard. The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is based in Taunton.
In Wiltshire employment is provided by firms like The Early Learning Centre in South Marston and Castrol, Nationwide Building Society and Research Councils in Swindon. Auto manufactoring happens in and around Swindon and South Marston and in Blunsdon St Andrew. Dyson is based in Malmesbury and in Devizes is the Wadworth Brewery. Shreddies employs staff at Staverton and Virgin Mobile is in Trowbridge. Salisbury Cathedral in Salisbury attracts hospitality employment with its many tourists. Chippenham has the HQ of Wincanton plc and Invensys Rail Group.

Bournemouth is, after Bristol, one of the most important employment centres with both tourism and service industries. 93% of the workforce in 2007 was employed in Service industries. The manufacturing sector has declined and is predominantly based in Poole which employs 3% of the workforce. Tourism is crucial to Bournemouth employing many workers.
Swindon has employers like Honda at South Marston, BMW/Mini in Stratton and Motorola. Intel has its European head office and Nationwide Building Society and Zurich Financial Services are all in Swindon. Swindon also has the registered Head Office of the National Trust. Banks such as Barclays, Natwest, HSBC and Lloyds TSB all have offices in the town. Legal firms such as Clarke Holt, Thring Townsend and Lemon & Co provide jobs as well as accountants Dennis & Turnbull and IT companies.
