Cardiff is one of the main cities in Wales where we provide job opportunities. The employment rate has been running about twice the national average for the last few years, making Cardif a hot spot for welsh jobs. An estimated 18,000 people are self-employed with the total workforce around 194,000. Service sector jobs dominate with just 9% of employees in manufacturing activities. Public admin, education and health is the largest job sector in Cardiff, providing employment for 32% of the workforce. Financial and business services are very big in Cardiff and we often have finance related jobs such as banking, accountancy and insurance, providing work for 20% of the workforce. Over 20 % of employees in Cardiff are in the distribution, hotels and restaurants recruitment sectors. Retail and tourism is on the up, providing hospitality work in hotels and restaurants. A 600 million regeneration programme for Cardiff's St. David's Centre has created retail shop the new shopping space. Cardiff has above average levels of employment in the financial services sector and is strong in the financial services, call centres and telesales, TV, media and film, pharmaceuticals and sales jobs. Growth areas for jobs are in construction, distribution and logistics, hotels and restaurants, transport and telecoms, banking and insurance, public admin, teaching jobs and health.

Swansea had 70% of its workforce in employment during 2008. These were mostly professional and technical occupations along with administrative and secretarial work, sales and customer service. Employment in Swansea grew by 14,000 between 2001 and 2006. Mmanufacturing Swansea fell between 2001 and 2005.

Cardiff and the North of Wales has experience employment growth while the South Wales Valleys have suffered decline. Average earnings vary considerably across Wales, they are generally higher in east Wales. Wages in Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot are centres of skilled manufacturing employment so have remained good. In the north and north west earnings are low but the employment rates are high and above the Welsh average. Wales suffered from the continuous decline in heavy industry with the disappearance of coal mining in the 1980. This left high unemployment with rates in West Wales and the Valleys still above the Welsh average. Merthyr Tydfil and Neath Port Talbot have the largest proportion of people in the UK not working because of long-term illness or disability.
