Employment and Yorkshire

Yorkshire and The Humber employment rate for Oct to Dec 2010 was 68.2 per cent and there were 2.39 million employed in Yorkshire and the Humber region. The unemployment rate was just over 9 per cent and there were 244,000 recorded unemployed people. The inactivity rate was nearly 25 per cent and there were 841,000 inactive people aged between 16 to 64.

Leeds is one of the major employment centres for Yorkshire and has a diverse economy with employment tending to be more in the service sector unlike in the past. In 2002, over 400,000 employees were registered with nearly 25% in public admin, education and health. Nearly 24% were in banking, finance and insurance while 21.4% were in distribution, hotels and restaurant jobs. Surprisingly, Leeds financial sector is the 2nd largest in the UK, providing finance jobs covering investment, insurance, banking and accountancy. Growth in retail, telesales or call centres, offices and media have produced a high rate of economic growth. Leeds has the only subsidiary office of the Bank of England. Trevelyan Square houses the NHS offices, and the extensive retail shopping area has a catchment of 3.2 million people creating a busy retail and sales jobs environment.

We have shown a reasonable quantity of careers and employment for Halifax. As well as Halifax plc which offers finance, accounting and banking jobs, there is the confectionery sector providing factory and production the area. Bradford is also a very important town in Yorkshire for employment. It is the 3rd largest after Leeds and Sheffield. The old wool and textile industries and general manufacturing accounts for nearly 1 in 5 jobs. Bradford's service economy accounts for 77% of Bradford's 195,000 jobs. Information technology and financial services are the biggest growth areas, with tourism and retail a close second. Bradford is home to Morrisons, Pace Plc and Hallmark Cards. There are also big financial institutions like Yorkshire Building Society, Bradford & Bingley Building Society and Provident Financial, all providing valuable employment.

Unemployment was high for Wakefield during the 1990s but now Wakefield District has a below-average unemployment figure. This is partly due to nearby Leeds providing good employment opportunities. Wakefield is mainly old coal mining towns as having had industries like wool, machine tools, glass and other manufacturing industries.

Huddersfield is a large market town and has offered plenty of employment over the last few years. It is within the Borough of Kirklees halfway between Leeds and Manchester. Bradford is the nearest city and many people commute from Huddersfield. It is a town of higher education, the media and sports employment.

Kingston upon Hull, also known as just Hull, is in East Yorkshire. The economy of Hull was based mostly on trading and the sea including fishing. Hull remains a busy sea port, handling 13 million tonnes of cargo per year. Freight handling jobs and transport related careers are often found for Hull. Recently, Network Rail has invested in the train links, thus promoting The ports operations which are run by Associated British Ports. The port employs around 5,000 people.

North Yorkshire comprises of several employment centres where we have had various jobs and careers on offer. These areas include Selby, Harrogate, Craven and Richmondshire. Other areas of recruitment that have recently been active are Hambleton, Ryedale, Scarborough and the City of York. Towns worth mentioning as employment centres are Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees.

Scarborough is a coastal town so the employment includes tourism and the fishing industry. Weekend retreats are popular from nearby Leeds and Bradford. Hospitality jobs, hotel and restaurant work can be found.

Middlesbrough has a large shopping district made up of several separate shopping centres. There is a £1.5 billion investment programme called Tees Valley Regeneration which is providing construction jobs and has started work on reclaiming Middlesbrough Docklands to bring new business and homes to a 250 acres site. Trades and building jobs will follow.
