Background7 layers is a company offering engineering services in the testing and qualification sector for wireless communicationtechnologies and products. Founded in 1999 in Ratingen (Germany) further laboratories have been set up in Cambridge (UK),Beijing (China), Irvine (USA) and Seoul (Korea).ServicesOur services range from the development of core and test specifications, test cases, the optimization of technology andproduct development through the provision of test solutions to global qualification. This includes providingcertification testing in our own laboratories and our customers as well as conducting testing on live public networks inthe field.The RoleUnder the general direction of the Team Manager of the OIL team (Operation of Interlab ' Laboratories), the ApplicationEnablers Engineers role is to provide Application Enablers testing services for mobile terminal product manufacturersand create and maintain Application Enablers-related content within 7 layers project management software. The role willinitially concentrate on the current application enablers and IOP testing of application-enablers such as MMS withinterminal products but shall develop to cover testing of other applications including PoC, VT, IMPS and DRM.The Application Enablers Engineer shall prepare for, define, plan and conduct testing projects in the laboratories. Thisincludes operating test equipment personally.The current vacancy is with 7 layers UK Limited. The primary work location will be Melbourn Science Park, Melbourn,Royston. Some off-shift and/or off-site work will be necessary.Primary FunctionsThe Application Enablers Engineer shall be an expert on Application Enablers methods and the interoperability (IOP)requirements of the common certification programmes, especially those for GSM/3G such as the GCF and PTCRB schemes.The Application Enablers Engineer shall become the test expert and attendance of various meetings including the GCFApplication Enablers Agreement Group, OMA and ITMC meetings to ensure the latest knowledge of new methods andspecifications is shared within the group.The Application Enablers Engineer shall set up new test projects, test plans, send progress reports and generate testreports for the customer and team using the companys software. The Application Enablers Engineer shall co-ordinate workwith the Project Manager in our MTC (Training & Certification Management) Team and maintain data about projects, orders,subcontract orders raised and project costs in the companys databases.It is essential that the Application Enablers Engineer shall observe prescribed deadlines. He or she shall carry out hisor her work in accordance with the requirements of the companys quality management system and actively proposeimprovements and extensions to our to our product Development Services.Employment StandardsThe Application Enablers Engineer must fulfil the following prerequisites: at least 2 years experience within the GSM/3Gterminal development or testing area with a demonstrable knowledge of current Application Enablers.Knowledge of the following certification programmes is desirable: PTCRB, GCF and OMA with relevant understanding of thecertification requirements for multi-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) and multi-mode terminals (including UMTS FDD I/II/IV).Education/ExperienceBA / BSc / BEng or equivalent in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Computer Science, and understanding ofquality assurance principles.I.T. skillsGood working knowledge of Microsoft Office with spreadsheet / database familiarity. The confidence in I.T. ability tolearn new tools and applications, especially those developed in house by 7 layers.Other desired skillsAn excellent communicator, a team player with a flexible pro-active approach. An engineer with commercial sense and theself-motivation to work for extended periods without supervision. An inventive person with the confidence to propose anddevelop new test services.The Application Enablers Engineer shall have an excellent customer manner and be able to perform tests in the presence ofthe customers representative. A proven ability to make a significant contribution in a fast-paced environment with ahigh regard for quality and commitment to professional development is required.He or she shall communicate in a prompt, courteous and effective manner with all customers internal and external,including providing information, answering questions and relaying messages. He or she shall develop and maintain goodworking relationships with all teams in the company.
