The UK employment rate for those between 16 to 64 for the 3 months to February 2011 was 70.7 per cent. The number of people employed aged sixteen or over increased by approximately 143,000 on the quarter and by 390,000 on the year to reach a total of just under 30 million. The number of UK employed is 331,000 lower than the peak of 29.56 million recorded for the 3 months to May 2008 which was just before the recession. The quarterly increase was driven by full time employment which rose by 140,000 on the quarter to attain 21.30 million. The number of men in full time work increased by 95,000 to achieve 13.65 million and the number of women in full time work rose by 45,000 to 7.65 million.

The unemployment rate for the 3 months to February 2011 was 7.8 per cent of the active population. The total of unemployed people dropped by 17,000 over the quarter to 2.48 million. The number of unemployed men reduced by 31,000 on the quarter to 1.45 million but the number of unemployed women went up by 14,000 to 1.03 million. The number of people not employed for up to 12 months fell by nearly 30,000 to 1.63 million but the number of people not employed for more than twelve months went up by 11,000 to 847,000.
