Description:

PRINCIPLE MECHANICAL ENGINEER, CAMBRIDGE - GBP 40,000 p.a. Duties:i) Conceptualise, develop, design Aerospace and Defence products & support equipment in accordance with Customerrequirements & internal Company proceduresii) Provide support to other depts, suppliers & directly to the end users to ensure the product meets requirements,specifications & is designed for manufacture & assemblyiii) Identify new technologies; create intellectual property & implement continuous improvement within the MechanicalDesign Area.iv) Reporting to Project Leader & supported by the Mechanical Design Process Leader, work independently & proactively tocomplete engineering tasks to budget at the right quality on-time (cost, quality, schedule).Role/Activities: Design & develop mechanical & electro-mechanical systems using SolidWorks 3D Modelling & 2D Drafting Commission, conduct development & support qualification tests & trials of equipment (on & off-site) design & specifytest equipment as required. Analyse mechanical systems & components using hand calculations, FEA (Strand, SDRC I-Deas, CosmosWorks, etc.),Spreadsheets Evaluate risks using techniques such as FMEA, FEM, design reviews, etc. & mitigate them using development tests Prepare documentation including: BOM, Drawings, Change Notes, technical reports, test specifications for systems &sub-assemblies for internal & external circulation Provide mechanical design solutions that consider the full lifecycle (cradle to grave) of the product, monitorproduct cost & mass progression during development Prepare & give technical presentations as necessary Liase with Operations Teams not limited to but including:*Product Support Dept; with investigations into field service/reliability issues*Marketing Dept; prepare time, material estimates, activity reports, cost / mass models & prepare the technical contentfor bids*Programmes Dept; prepare time, activity reports, cost / mass models & bids*Production/Process Eng. Dept; to ensure work, assembly & process instructions and documentation accurately reflects thedesign intent, & that qualified products enter production efficiently (NPI) Attend meetings, project and design reviews (On & off site) Provide technical support to our customers, at their premises if necessary situated anywhere in the world (may need totravel)Reporting:Report to the (assigned) Project Leader on technical & engineering design issues, matters of employment, day to daypersonnel aspects such as sickness & holiday, training, salary, performance & to the Mechanical Design Process Leader onskill issues, professional development, etc.The Principal Mechanical Engineer does not have any direct reports, but maybe expected to manage installation teams, production operatives, sub-contractors, consultants, etc. as the need arises.The Principal Mechanical Engineer shall work in accordance with the requirements Company procedures to ensure productdocumentation is adequate and approved for flight.Support, or where applicable act as, the Project/Lead Engineer toensure products meet customer requirements and delivery schedules.Working Conditions:Working in a modern and tidy open plan office using latest mechanical design hardware (dual 19 TFT displays, PentiumXeon workstations, desktop colour printer, etc). A suite of design software including SolidWorks, SDRC I-Deas,CosmosWorks and Strand 7, and with access to a development laboratory the environment the tools are provided to ensurethe Principal Mechanical Engineer can function efficiently.The Principal Mechanical Engineer will work as a member ofmultidisciplinary engineering team and could occasionally need to work alone. Based at Cambridge but will need to visitGreenford (final assembly site), and customer/supplier sites as required.Essential:-HND in Mechanical Engineering-Apprenticeship in Aerospace, Automotive, Rail or Specialised Machine Industries-Must be able to get Government Security Clearance- Practising Mechanical Engineer who uses 3D design tools to design systems and components- Knowledge of designing products subjected to harsh environmental loads/conditions- Good understanding of mechanical fundamentals, such as stress/strain relationships, formulae for beams, plates,springs, fastener selection, etc.- Able to analyse mechanical systems and structures, using mathematical and empirical techniques, performing tests onsamples and using FEA tools- Proven ability to select materials and finishes- A broad background that has provided an ability to understand all aspects of the packaging of electronics. For example,PCB designs, thermal management, EMC management, reliability, maintainability, unit cost and so on.- An appreciation of electronics so is able to work with non-mechanical engineers to achieve cost effective designs.- Used programme management techniques such as networks, PERT and Gantt charts.
