Our client is a UK based monthly current affairs magazine. Established over 10 years ago, it hasgrown its circulation rapidly. It has developed a strong brand and is well regarded as aninfluential, agenda setting part of the British media.The role of Publisher is equivalent to that of Managing Director.The Publisher has overall responsibility for the commercial side of the business and an important consultative role inthe editorial direction of the magazine. Specifically, this includes the following tasks:Increasing subscriptions to the magazine and improving its profitabilityManaging an office of twelve full time staff, including pay negotiations, supervising workflow and providing strategicleadershipOverall responsibility for the key commercial departments including marketing, accounts, advertising, PR, events,sponsorship and syndicationDeveloping the commercial strategy of the company, including the setting of budgets, updating the business plan,responsibility for profit and loss and the supervision of cash flowIdentifying areas for strategic cooperation with other companies and organisations and securing sponsorship for specialprojectsMaintaining contact with the Board of Directors and the Company Secretary including the dissemination of information andquarterly reportingManaging and negotiating with a range of key suppliersDeveloping a network of contacts within the magazine publishing sectorKey competencies:At least 5 years publishing experience, latterly at a senior level either as publisher or publishing director in anestablished firmAn excellent understanding of both subscription based marketing and newstrade marketingAn interest in, and understanding of, current affairsStrong financial skills, including ability to manage book-keeping, audit and financial reporting functionsExcellent negotiating skills and the ability to deal confidently with directors and board membersGood understanding of internet-based publishing techniques experience of managing development and exploitation ofpublishing websitesExcellent communication skills both oral and writtenGood DTP skills including familiarity with Quark Xpress, Microsoft Excel, and an understanding of subscriptions databasesystemsThe ability to think strategically and commercially |
