Main purpose of the job To participate in the complete development cycle for radio systems, from preparing the specification and designing the architecture through to detailed component-level design, and eventually hand-over to volume production. Type of work undertaken by the group Our RF Systems Group forms a major part of the Wireless Business Unit and is responsible for delivering wireless IC design, specific radio hardware and overall wireless system design to clients of the WBU. In this role the RF Systems Group works very closely with the DSP and the Wireless Software Groups both of which are part of the Wireless Business Unit. At a higher level the Wireless Business Unit applies standards-based radio solutions to a wide range of our clients' applications principally in the telecommunications, healthcare, consumer goods and automotive areas. It pre-develops software and hardware designs for wireless systems (existing ones include DECT and Bluetooth), and can either license this standard intellectual property, or base novel designs upon it. The WBU has often customised a pre-developed radio solution to match a particular set of power, range and data rate requirements, whilst retaining the bulk of the design. This reduces significantly the cost, development time and risks. Recent examples include a cellular radio telemetry system for real-time medical monitoring, a high-quality digital radio link for a professional intercom system, a cordless video-telephone system, and a wireless elevator call button in addition to a large number of more conventional applications. Specific responsibilities In this role you will be responsible for: Undertaking the detailed design of radio circuits down to component and printed circuit level, and guiding and reviewing the layout Specifying test requirements and limits for the radio functions Eventually guiding and supervising junior engineers Working from (and in due course, preparing) specifications for radio system functions taking the wider view of the product and application requirements Being able to create and analyse radio designs from a block and level diagram Working at all times as part of a close-knit multi-disciplinary project team focussed on delivering the design solution to our client Participating in sales meetings with clients to understand their requirements and demonstrate our capability Preparing and contributing to proposals and quotations Creating novel design solutions that will be of particular interest to our clients Maintaining and developing CAD systems to enhance our development capability Identifying and pursuing new techniques and circuit solutions for RF system design to maintain our leading edge capability Minimum requirements With at least 3 years experience working as a radio designer for a company in the telecommunications or other relevant area, you will have extensive and essential experience of RF circuit design. Being experienced in the design of a wide range of RF circuit functions, you will be familiar with the following: Matching of RF amplifier stages Stability analysis Noise figure analysis A good knowledge of RF and communications CAD tools is needed as well as the traditional chart-based tools, as is a proven record of getting designs close to right first time.
