Applicants must be willing to provide evidence of eligibility to work in the UK if requested.Main purpose of the jobThe Safety Manager leads the company's health, safety and environment (SHE) activity, covering the safety of staff andanyone affected by the companys operations. This involves the overall provision of technical SHE advice and guidance tothe company's staff.Type of work undertaken by the groupThe Safety Manager promotes good SHE practices inside the company. This involves developing procedures, encouraging theirtake up, and providing technical support and advice.A main activity is the promotion of good practice by other managers and their teams. This involves identifying areaswhere practices need improvement, co-ordinating with the senior management team, and leading the programme of developingnew procedures and promoting their take up.Amongst those working on client projects, the Safety Manager finds ways of persuading project managers to follow existingprocedures for risk assessment and control, plus advising on SHE law and good practice in technical engineering aspects,and assisting in safety design reviews of equipment under development.Amongst support areas, activities include assisting other managers with risk assessments and implementing procedures, andenhancing procedures for managing contractors.The Safety Manager identifies needs for safety training, and arranges these courses either with outside trainers or byproviding the training him/herself. SHE audits are conducted across the whole spectrum of company activities.The safety of the routine working environment includes managing fire hazards and fire procedures, and various activitiessuch as VDU assessments, and first aid arrangements.Specific responsibilitiesThe Safety Manager provides both management and SHE professional advice. Specific responsibilities include:Defining direction and prioritising SHE activities.Working with the SHE Director to define annual SHE priorities, and report on progress to the Company's Board.Driving the take up of existing SHE procedures, i.e. client project work and support activities.Developing new SHE procedures, and finding appropriate ways of adapting them to the company.Enhancing SHE procedures to reflect changes in best practice and in legislative requirements.Working closely with the QA Manager to develop co-ordinated SHE and QA procedures.Driving initiatives to improve the implementation of SHE procedures, by increasing the awareness at senior levels,encouraging take-up at practical levels, and running a SHE hearts and minds campaign.Responsibility for setting and operating the SHE budget.Managing the fire and emergency management procedures.Co-ordinating the first aid team and promoting the provision of first aid and occupational health support.As a SHE professional, the Safety Manager will apply his/her knowledge and experience by:Taking part in SHE audits on client projects at the company.Taking part in project safety reviews and proposing technical solutions to projects.Inspecting labs, workshops, projects and other workplaces to identify safety hazards.Inspecting project-developed equipment prior to delivery to clients.Identifying generic project safety issues and initiating common solutions.Taking part in audits and inspections of support activities and proposing solutions.Performing investigations into accidents and near misses.Identifying training needs, and performing some training including induction training.Performing occasional SHE consultancy assignments to other companies associated with the company or to company clients.Minimum requirementsThis is an important role with a lot of freedom of action. The ideal candidate will be able to show good initiative andinfectious enthusiasm, combined with common sense and pragmatism. It will be necessary to persuade others at all levels,and be able to discuss technical engineering solutions with project managers. Personal communication skills and drive arevital in this role.The successful candidate will be a confident person who is prepared to try to get things done largely without thanks fromthe internal customers he/she is trying to help. They will have confidence both in their own judgement, and also in theirown specialist SHE knowledge. Their motivation will come from seeing results, but also from pleasing those they are thereto serve. They must be largely self-motivated, taking the initiative to identify and solve problems. They willalternately need to be tenacious one minute, followed by pragmatic the next. Their drive will not be dulled by obstaclesalong the way.Knowledge of SHE legislation and good practice is fundamental, with formal SHE qualifications such as the NEBOSH Diplomaqualification being desirable.The successful candidate is likely to have a background in a technical discipline, preferably engineering, ideally in adevelopment environment. Preference will be given to those who have been exposed to the process of designing equipmentand be familiar with a range of engineering disciplines. Education should be to degree level or equivalent in a technicaldiscipline, ideally a branch of engineering.The successful candidate must be capable of writing clear operating procedures which will need to be understood by arange of levels of staff. In addition to the preparation of procedures, the Safety Manager must be able to implementoperating procedures in discussion with others, and train staff in how to apply them.
