* Use project management techniques to ensure the planning and tracking of software delivery. * Define the delivery strategy to integrate software from internal and external SW development teams. * Provide status to the programme & elevate issues. * Keep Software development teams aligned to programme direction. * Direct software effort to meet programme QCDs. Programme accountabilities: * Negotiate software content, schedule, resource budgets and software impacts on manufacturing costs with the programme and product planning offices. * Develop and maintain programme software development strategies and plans. * Ensure appropriate staff / skill resources are allocated to achieve agreed QCD targets. * Track production of detailed software development plans showing how agreed programme QCD (quality, cost, delivery) targets will be met * Track team progress against the software development plans to ensure the QCD targets are achieved. * Support the programme software requirements change management forum (RRB). * Facilitate the programme software PMC and software planning meetings. * Ensure the software development plans are updated when the QCD targets are changed. * Ensure timely and effective response to problem reports so that Q targets are achieved. * Ensure timely and accurate response to change requests so that CD targets can be updated. * Ensure the programmes software development activities adhere to the applicable approved software development processes. * Set and score monthly objectives. Functional Accountabilities: * As a senior member of the Systems Software team contribute to activities to improve effectiveness and productivity of the team. HR / Staff management accountabilities: * This position has limited line management responsibility, though there may be one or two direct reports. * Provide secondary input into performance appraisals / annual salary appraisals for team leaders. Internal Relationships * Reports to and accepts direction from Systems Software Manager. * Works closely with Programme Office as a core member of the programme team. * Provides programme based direction to software project managers / subsystem team leaders. Works directly with software engineers as and when required. * Works with software release team, software testing teams and manufacturing to ensure quality deliveries throughout the software delivery value chain. * Cooperates with the Systems Software Managers other direct reports (Architecture/Platform Manager, Software Systems Manager, Software Services Manager, Software Development Managers) to ensure overall programme QCD targets are achieved. Cooperates with: * Software Systems group to develop software requirements. * Software Service group for configuration management, integration testing, and software release. * Architecture/Platform group for architecture and platform issues. * Member of the software Management Steering Group. * Works with the Software Process Improvement Manager in setting SPI goals. * Works with the SQA group in monitoring process compliance. * Works with all other non-software disciplines to ensure integration with non-software modules as required. External Relationships * Works with subcontract software delivery teams / external software delivery partners to communicate programme direction, negotiate and track software QCDs. Candidate Profile A background in development of real-time embedded sysytems in a product development environment. Direct experience of: * Project Management of complex software projects with > 50 heads over >18 months duration. * Risk Management techniques. * Software Estimation techniques. * Software planning, Critical path analysis, resource levelling. * Working with external partners or subcontract software delivery teams. * Exposure to the entire software development life-cycle on several substantial projects working under ISO 9001, TickIT, or CMM-based quality/process management systems. Education * Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics or similar. Commercial and Technical Knowledge * At least 5 years project management experience. * Experience of a project management methodology is desirable. * Use of MS Project or similar. * Experience of EVM desirable. * Principles and practices of software configuration management experience with ClearCase desirable. * Experience of one or more software design techniques / methods. * Experienced in developing real-time embedded systems. * Use of real-time operating systems. Skills and Abilities * Able to think strategically and tactically to ensure delivery of software QCDs. * Able to organise, lead, and motivate the software teams to meet commitments. * Attention to detail, ensuring accuracy of plans, estimates & schedules, and ensuring the quality of the groups deliverables. * Responsive to changes and able to negotiate, resolve and prioritise possibly conflicting goals/objectives. * Excellent verbal and written communications to negotiate delivery commitments, report progress to the programme team meeting and executive programme team meeting and convey direction to programme software staff. * Able to work effectively with senior managers and peers in a complex multi-discipline multi-programme environment. |
