In 2009, retail sales were over 280 billion and since then the UK retail industry has created an extra 12,750 full-time jobs. This is dispite the down turn in the overall economy. At the moment most jobs are in tradition style shops and retail outlets, but with the growth of online sales, many new jobs are being created in IT areas. These include ecommerce jobs, web designers, telesales and customer help services that support retail web sites. The UK now has over 200,000 online retail businesses and over 600,000 jobs related to e-retail (Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), 2010).
